DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) - When Jason Witten decided to leave his broadcasting career after one season and return to play with the Dallas Cowboys, it was certain that Witten loved playing the game.
Following his return, the Cowboys have had a rough season, but will Witten stick around or popssibly head in another direction?
On Thursday, Witten said he “for sure” wants to get into coaching when he retires again, and he wants to do it in the NFL.
When asked about his thoughts of Witten, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that both Witten, and LB Sean Lee "have the skill, knowledge, the internal pursuit of success," to be coaches in professional football.
"Loyalty and work ethic" said Jerry Jones on the things he looks for in people he's going to hire, and that should probably make you realize Jason Witten could be a future Cowboys coaching hire.
Many have speculated that this could be Lee's final season with the Cowboys as well.
Jones even went further says that both Witten and Lee, "would probably be in my Top 5," regarding players having a future in the NFL after their playing career is over.
“I’ve spent my entire adulthood in pro football" said Witten recently. "Coaching is coaching. You want to be in a competitive level. For me, I think this is a level you can have a lot of success in just because you’re so familiar with it. Really your whole life.”
As Witten as the Cowboys prepare for the final game of the regular season against the Washington Redskins and a chance to advance into the playoffs, he says now is not the time to think about that. “There will be time to make that decision, but I do not envision this being my last game. I haven’t approached it that way. We’ll see what happens down the road, but I’m not approaching it that way.”
Turning to the linebacker who may be forcing Lee out of the game, Jerry Jones gave an update on Leighton Vander Esch and his progress following neck surgery that has kept him on the sidelines for most of the second half of the season.
Jones said that the Cowboys are confident Vander Esch will make a full recovery from his minor neck surgery and that they don’t believe it will continue to be an issue after he recovers from the procedure.
"He will have a full recovery" said Jones.
When asked about how important a win is against the NFC East rival Washington Redskins this weekend, Jones was quick to answer.
“Make no mistake about it, winning this game is very important to me, very important to the players, very important to this team” said Jones.
