DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The NFL has decided that the Cowboys will hold training camp at their team facility and will not be permitted to travel to Oxnard, California as they had done for the last eight years, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The NFL's decision means that the Cowboys will hold their entire training camp at The Star in Frisco. Since opening The Star in 2016, the Cowboys have spent the first portion of camp in California and the second half in North Texas.
Sources close to 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher had grown weary of the team being able to host camp out west. New Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was scheduled to go visit the team's facility in Oxnard in mid-March before COVID-19 wiped out that plan. The Cowboys had planned to arrive for camp in Southern California on July 21.
As they have every year, it's unknown if fans will be permitted to attend traning camp this time around. It's also unclear if this edict by the NFL will have any affect on the Cowboys preseason schedule, which kicks off with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on Aug. 6. That game is followed by a date with the Los Angeles Chargers in the brand new SoFi Stadium on Aug. 16. The west coast preseason opener is a staple on the Cowboys schedule every year due to them holding the start of camp in Oxnard every year. It's a little different, obviously, with the inclusion of the Hall of Fame Game.
Dallas is one of two teams in the NFL who hold their camp outside of their home state. The other is the Panthers, who hold their camp in nearby Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Several other teams including the Steelers and Bills hold their camps at colleges near their home base.
