The New England Patriots lost a key weapon and playmaker for the season on Wednesday, when they placed explosive wideout Josh Gordon on season-ending injured reserve due to a knee injury.

After a career filled with drug suspensions, Gordon had seemingly found the right home in New England, only to have his comeback cut short with the injury after less than two seasons and just 17 games with the team

Though this means he is likely done with the Patriots, reports have surfaced that there is a chance Gordon could return to football, albeit with another team, at some point this season.

More on WR Josh Gordon: He exacerbated the bone bruises when he went down against the #Giants. It wasn’t a new injury suffered then. The team rested him a week, but he never looked quite right, I’m told. So IR now, he’ll work back to health, then land with a new team.

Through his six games on the field with Tom Brady this season, Gordon hauled in 20 catches on 36 targets for 287 yards and a touchdown, while averaging eight yards per target.

In preparation for this move, the Patriots acquired veteran wideout Mohamed Sane from the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a second-round pick.

The Patriots are also set to get another boost to their receiving core in week nine, when their first-round pick from the 2019 draft, N'Keal Harry, is set to return from the short term I.R. list after missing the first few weeks of the season with an ankle injury.

The 7-0 Patriots will look to stay undefeated when they take on Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns this Sunday at 3:25 PM on CBS.
