DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Texas Rangers and free agent catcher Robinson Chirinos have a "mutual interest in a reunion," T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reported Tuesday.

The Rangers elected to decline Chirinos' $4.5 million club option last season, and instead opted to sign a better defensive catcher in Jeff Mathis to a two-year, $6.25 million contract.

The move backfired as Mathis struggled mightily at the plate, hitting .158 with just two home runs, and an on-base percentage of .209. The Rangers were happy with what he added to the club defensively, but his offensive performance was simply not good enough.

Chirinos, meanwhile, flourished with the Houston Astros in 2019, hitting .238 with 17 home runs and 58 RBI in 114 games played.
