Texas will not pick up the options on relievers Shawn Kelley and Nate Jones, the club revealed Thursday.
Kelley had indicated to reporters after the season that he retire if the club didn't pick up his option for next season. He went 5-2 with a 4.94 ERA, including 11 saves in 47.1 innings.
Jones was acquired in a deal at the trade deadline but didn't pitch for the club as he continued to recover from a forearm injury.
The Rangers also traded for catcher Wellington Castillo from the Chicago White Sox but that deal was only about getting the $250,000 international slot money they also received in exchange for minor leaguer Jonah McReynolds.
TR Sullivan from MLB.com reports that the club will decline Castillo's $8 million option and pay his $500,000 buyout, making him a free agent.
Hunter Pence, Edinson Volquez, and Logan Forsythe all became free agents on Thursday. The Rangers roster now stands at 37 players.
Pence was named Sporting News' Comeback Player of the Year last week after he earned an All-Star selection in 2019. The 36-year-old hit .297 with 18 home runs and 59 RBI in 83 games played.
Pence indicated after the season that he would have an interest in returning to Texas in 2020
