DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Mavericks have their eye on cashing in on the star that is Luka Doncic.

The Mavs have moved to protect Luka Doncic's nickname by filing trademarks on THE MATADOR and EL MATADOR.The problem for Doncic is the MAVS are claiming ownership of the name.If Doncic leaves the Mavs he will not own his nickname. He needs a better trademark lawyer. pic.twitter.com/QXmOR22Lnn

Addition legal point here: The USPTO will require that the Mavs have Doncic's written permission to register this trademark (because it is his nickname). The application filed by the MAVS attorneys DID NOT include this required consent from Doncic.

According to attorney Josh Gerben, Dallas has filed trademarks for "THE MATADOR and EL MATADOR," the nickname that was given to the rookie by player development coach Mike Procopio.

The Mavs have filed trademarks for THE MATADOR and EL MATADOR, the nickname given to Luka Doncic by Mavs player development coach Mike Procopio. Interesting that team is trying to own the nickname given to one of its players. Filing first discovered by @JoshGerben.

Per Gerben, the application filed by attorneys for the team didn't include Doncic's written consent, which is required by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
