DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Coming into the draft, the Cowboys knew they needed to upgrade their defense. That was before they had any idea that the top receiver and the sixth best overall player on their draft board was going to be sitting there when they made the No. 17 overall pick on Thursday night.
"We are. It's one of those (where) you wake up and it feels even better. Obviously, you had a little bit of angst there because we were thinking coming in defense might be a little priority over that receiver spot," Stephen Jones said when asked if he was on cloud nine after Lamb's selection. "But as we mentioned several times before the draft started, receiver was certainly an area we wanted to address in this draft. When it played out there and CeeDee Lamb was sitting there, who was out best receiver on the board and the sixth best player on our board, it was too good to pass up. He's a competitor, he's been a great player there at Oklahoma. I think he's going to be a great fit in our offense."

Despite the Lamb pick, there's no question the Cowboys would still like to focus on the defensive side of things throughout the rest of the draft.
"Obviously, we've been very up front that we want to help the defense out. The way our board is setting up here we got some really great defensive players still left on the board that can certainly do that for us," Jones said. "I feel like that we can more than likely, unless the right situation presents itself, let the draft come to us. I think when the night's all said and done we'll have a great opportunity to address the defense and hopefully come away with two really good football players."
Jones was also asked if the team has a first-round grade on any of the players who are left on the board. Jones didn't want to mention any names, of course, but he did acknowledge that they "still have a player or two" with a first-round grade.

So, could they move up for one of those players?
"One of the things you have to take into account here, guys, is that when there's just a tenth of a point in our grading system between (players) ... you can see there's barely a difference in terms of the deal there. You got to really decide whether you'd rather have just one player or two players," Jones said. Because, obviously, you're going to have to give up a significant pick to move from the middle of the second to the top of the second. You're probably talking about giving up your third-round pick. You know, when you really feel that pain, beause we feel like we have a great board up and we feel like we're going to get two really good football players by sitting still, it's real painful to want to move up."
