If Twitter is any indication, the city of Chicago and the dedicated fan base of the Bears wasn't too inspired by the team's decision to sign quarterback Andy Dalton. As you might have guessed, naming him the starting quarterback on Twitter also didn't play out too well.
Popular account Freezing Cold Takes was tagged frequently, and the account responded as well, which usually doesn't bode well for said tweet. And speaking of freezing cold takes....
The Bears' tweet brought to mind another team's "QB1" post that gained some infamy over the years. This one, though, came with its own personal highlight reel. This one came from a team that has been led by a franchise star over the past three seasons, with MVP aspirations for the future. And this one resulted in the "QB1" in question starting and losing two games, recording a single touchdown to seven interceptions on the season.
Yes, the Bills released a hype promo video for Nathan Peterman ahead of the 2018 season and declared him the QB1. Of course, when a team makes that decision, it's good to show support and excite the fan base for the guy who will be running the offense all season long... or, at least until he gets benched. And then cut. All didn't go as planned for Peterman, who spent 2020 as a backup with the Raiders and signed another one-year deal there for 2021.
Some of my favorite stats in NFL history come from Peterman's brief Bills stint, including one from WGR's own Howard Simon on October 24, 2018, in which he updated all of us on Peterman's career stat line: 6 games played, 79 pass attempts, 9 interceptions and 2 touchdowns, or one interception for every 8.7 pass attempts.
Luckily, that trend didn't last too long, and the next preseason QB1 designation went just a little bit better.
Now, you've just got to wonder how many other cringey QB1 posts there have been over the years. Here's one for starters.
