'It says a lot': Dak Prescott comments on Cowboys contact situation
We are just over a week away from the start of the NFL regular season, and the Dallas Cowboys are still trying to find a resolution to their contract situation with quarterback Dak Prescott.
As it stands, Prescott is likely hoping to get north of $55 million per year, given the contracts of Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love and Joe Burrow - each of whom is currently at the top of the market and making $55 million per year.
Unfortunately for Prescott, it seems the Cowboys aren't in a hurry to make any sort of decision before the opener.
"All of our focus on what's coming up here in the next 10 days, two weeks. That game takes priority over anything," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "Lamb wasn't here. Dak is here. We have really have no more to do in those significant things we talk about every time we meet to have this season on go by opening day. It will remain like it's been."
And it seems Prescott is taking notice of the long wait, and seemingly passive motivation from his team to strike an agreement.
“I think it says a lot if it is or if it isn’t," Prescott said on Thursday about what it will mean if he doesn't sign a new deal by the season opener.
That said, he isn't necessarily discouraged by what Jones said either.
In fact, he hasn't paid attention to his comments to the media for some time now.
“I stopped, honestly, listening to things (Jerry Jones) says to the media a long time ago," Prescott said. "It doesn’t really hold weight with me.”
However, unlike many other players who are negotiating their next big pay day, Prescott didn't hold out. Instead, he continued to practice and worked to get better during training camp.
And whether he signs a contract or not before the opener, he is going to put his best foot forward for the team.
“You gotta love it. You gotta embrace it. That’s the challenge. We as the players and the coaches don’t have the full say in whether we’re here or not. It’s about us controlling what we can. It’s about sticking together. … Yeah, it’s now.”
Dallas opens vs. the Browns in Cleveland on Sept. 8 at 3:25 pm.
