Cowboys' COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread ahead of Saints game

The Dallas Cowboys continue to feel the impact of COVID-19.

Right tackle Terence Steele has now been placed on the COVID-19/reserve list and will miss Thursday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, as well as several assistant coaches.

Offensive line coach Joe Philbin, assistant offensive line coach Jeff Blasko and offensive assistant Scott Tolzien will all also be unavailable for Thursday’s game due to COVID.

“I think the biggest thing is just to make sure that the job description and responsibility is always tight,” head coach Mike McCarthy said, per ESPN. “We feel really good about our game-plan process. How we’ll do the group meetings, we’ll spend a little more time together as a group. Yeah, so this is something that I think is an opportunity for young coaches to take advantage of. Definitely, I’ll be where I need to be this week. We have some moving parts.”

The Cowboys will continue to test daily for players, coaches and staff through Tuesday and hold virtual meetings Sunday and Monday with Tuesday still to be determined.

McCarthy wanted to keep the door open for a “normal” practice two days before the game.

The Cowboy’s COVID outbreak comes amid a rough stretch for the team, having lost three of their last four games.

Wide receiver Amari Cooper missed the last two games after testing positive for COVID-19. Cooper is unvaccinated but is expected to return to practice this week before the Saints game.

McCarthy said he still needs to check with the head athletic trainer about Cooper to get an idea where he is at physically after missing the last 10 days.

CeeDee Lamb also missed Thursday’s game, although he was out with a concussion and not COVID-related. He was expected to be a participant in Sunday’s practice.
