FRISCO (105.3 The Fan) - Monday marked the first day of the offseason program for Cowboys players, which meant it was the unofficial “first day of school” for a few new faces.
One of those players is defensive end Dante Fowler, who comes to Dallas after stops with the Jaguars, Rams, and Falcons. The third overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Fowler has had his ups (11.5 sacks with the Rams in 2019) and downs (just 40 starts in seven years).
He hopes to find some stability with the Cowboys.
“This is a great opportunity. It's a team contending to be a Super Bowl champion,” Fowler said while speaking with reporters on Monday, adding that he’s “happy to be a Dallas Cowboy.”
One of the reasons for Fowler’s excitement is Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Fowler was recruited by Quinn to the University of Florida, and they spent his freshman year together with the Gators in 2012.
They were reunited at the NFL level in 2020 when Fowler signed with Atlanta in free agency. That reunion only lasted five games before Quinn was fired by the Falcons.
The addition of Fowler this offseason gives the duo a third shot to work together.
“I just love him as a ball coach,” Fowler said. “He loves ball. Just a real dude, and a guy that you want to play for. I’m fine with just playing for him the rest of my life, to be honest with you.”
Fowler said his affinity for Quinn goes beyond football.
“He knows the ins and outs of me, on the field and off the field. He knows my
family, he knows me personally.”
Fowler signed a one-year contract with the Cowboys in March, so the idea of
playing the rest of his career with Dan Quinn will have to be revisited next spring.
For now, Fowler is focused on a more immediate goal.
“I would love to be a Cowboy long term, but right now, I just want to come in
here and contribute, and do what I have to do for the team so we can get these wins and get to the Super Bowl.”
