Cowboys escape Pittsburgh on Prescott's late TD to Tolbert
The Dallas Cowboys needed almost all 60 minutes to come away with a 20-17 win in Pittsburgh on Sunday night. ... 58 minutes and 40 seconds to be exact.
The negative stories about Dak Prescott's turnover-filled performance were written and saved in drafts ... until he erased them by making two key plays in the final minute to help his team come away with a win.
On 2nd and goal from the 1-yard-line, Dallas was down 17-13 and had the ball with 35 seconds on the clock. Prescott handed the ball off to Rico Dowdle, who attempted to leap over the goal line for the go-ahead score. Dowdle was hit mid-flight by Steelers' linebacker Elandon Roberts and fumbled. Thankfully for the Cowboys, Prescott made a heads-up play and immediately fell on the ball to give Dallas two more chances to win the game.
After throwing an incomplete pass to Jalen Tolbert in the back of the end zone, Prescott went back to the third-year receiver, finding him just inside the goal line for the 4-yard touchdown to give Dallas a 20-17 lead.
Prescott had three turnovers on the day, but they will be pushed to the side thanks to his late-game heroics.
Dallas' offense got big performances out of Tolbert, who had seven catches for 87 yards, and Dowdle, who ran for a season-high 87 yards on 20 carries and had two catches for 27 yards and a touchdown.
The Cowboys wouldn't have won on Sunday without getting the stellar performance they got from a defense playing without its top four pass rushers entering training camp as defensive end Marshawn Kneeland never returned after suffering a knee injury early in the first quarter.
The depleted defense allowed the Steelers offense to put up just 266 yards on offense.
