FRISCO (105.3 The Fan) - Following the departures of Senior Personnel Executive Lionel Vital and National Scout Drew Fabianich, the Cowboys have made several changes to its personnel department.

At least five members of Dallas’ personnel department will have new titles moving forward. Cowboys PR confirmed the changes to 105.3 The Fan on Friday.

Mitch LaPoint, who was previously the Assistant Director of College Scouting, has now been promoted to director. LaPoint is in his 18th season with the Cowboys, and has also served as a National Scout, the Southeast Area Scout, and West Coast Area Scout. LaPoint spent 7 years with the Chiefs before joining the Cowboys.

LaPoint’s vacated position as the Assistant Director of College Scouting is being filled by Southeast Area Scout Chris Vaughn. Vaughn came to the Cowboys in 2017 after nearly 20 seasons as a college football coach. Sources tell 105.3 The Fan that Vaughn’s connections to college coaches are viewed as a real asset by the organization. Vaughn took part in the NFL’s inaugural Coach and Front Office Accelerator program at the Spring League Meeting in Atlanta.

West Coast Area Scout Ross Wuensche is being promoted to National Scout. Wuensche has been with the team for 10 years, first as a scouting intern, and then covering two areas for the Cowboys. Wuensche was the area scout responsible for players like Chidobe Awuzie, Michael Gallup, and Osa Odighizuwa.

In addition to Wuensche, the Cowboys are elevating Midwest Area Scout Klein Kubiak to a National Scout position, with a dual title of Special Projects. Kubiak spent time with the Texans and Broncos before joining the Cowboys in 2019. Kubiak was the area scout responsible for Dallas’ first round pick last month, Tulsa OT Tyler Smith. Sources have indicated Kubiak is expected to have some crossover responsibilities on the pro side of the personnel department.

Upper Midwest Area Scout Eric Ellingworth is taking over Vaughn’s spot as the Southeast Area Scout. Ellingworth spent time as a graduate assistant with the Florida Gators while Cowboys QB Coach Doug Nussmeier was on staff. Ellingworth spent a year as a scouting intern with the Jets before joining the Cowboys in 2019.

Perhaps the most notable aspect among all of Dallas’ changes is the fact that every position was filled internally. The Cowboys had considered a few external candidates, but ultimately decided to reward tenured staff.
