DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Though the Dallas Cowboys may be struggling on the field the season, linebacker Jaylon Smith continues to succeed off of it, making himself known as one of the most philanthropic players in the Dallas locker room.
As a result of that work, the Cowboys announced Smith as their Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award nominee on Thursday.
One of the NFL's highest honors, the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award goes to the player who exudes excellent both on and off of the field.
The eventual winner of the award, who will be named during Super Bowl week, will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of their choice. Moreover, each of the 32 players who have been nominated will receive a $40,000 donation to the charity of that player's choice.
"Jaylon exemplifies every quality that this award celebrates," Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer Charlotte Jones said. "He has a light that he wants to share and shine on others that is rare. We are excited to see what more he can accomplish through his work with minority entrepreneurs and the many other endeavors that he supports."
Smith has been known for his community outreach and entrepreneurial efforts throughout, and even before, his NFL career. Even during his rookie season, in which he did not play due to injury.
"It is an honor to be nominated by the Dallas Cowboys for this prestigious award," Smith said. "To be named in the same breath as NFL Legends like Walter Payton for the good work that we, as professional athletes, can use our platform for is humbling and it only encourages me to work harder to lift those up around me. MEI is my purpose beyond athletics, and I am excited that this award will help fuel our vision."
Smith has also excelled on the field, to a degree, sitting second in the NFL in tackles with 112 total stops through 12 games. Smith has also added an interception, 1.5 sacks, and four pass deflections, while occupying his linebacker spot.
