DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys have been hoping and planning for a return to Oxnard, California for training camp this coming season, and it appears now that they'll get their wish to do so, under some conditions.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported Friday that the league has sent out a memo to teams to inform them that they are permitted to hold training camp this summer at a site other than their home practice facility.

However, there are still hurdles to clear in order for the Cowboys to return to Oxnard, as the NFL has instructed teams who wish to hold camp away from their home facilities to submit a plan for how they will comply with COVID-19 protocols. The plan must be submitted to the league for approval no later than June 11.

For the first time since 2011, the Cowboys didn't hold at least a portion of training camp in Oxnard last year due to the pandemic. Instead, the team held camp at The Star in Frisco.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has yet to see the facilities in Oxnard and is looking forward to getting out there this summer if the league approves of their plan.

“If it’s everything that everybody says it is, I’m looking forward to it," McCarthy said in March. He added that he plans to visit Oxnard before July to scout the site. It's unknown if he has been able to visit in the time since he made those comments.

As the Cowboys prepare their plan for league approval, they'll begin offseason work next week in Frisco.

The Cowboys will hold their rookie minicamp from May 14-16, while organized team activities will be held on May 24-25, May 27, June 1, and June 3-4.

The team will finish up their offseason work with their mandatory minicamp from June 8-10. They'll then take a break until training camp begins sometime in July.

Dallas' first preseason game is set for Aug. 5 vs the Pittsburgh Steelers (Hall of Fame Game).
