Broaddus: Stephen Jones trying to sell Jerry Jones on hiring Brian Schottenheimer as next head coach

Should we pump the brakes on Brian Schottenheimer becoming the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys?

According to 105.3 The Fan's Bryan Broaddus, this search could be far from over if Jerry Jones gets his way.

Broaddus reported Thursday on the GBag Nation that Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is pushing for Schottenheimer to get the job, while Jerry isn't sure he's ready to settle on the offensive coordinator just yet while he surveys his options.

"I think that Stephen and Jerry Jr. are trying to convince [Jerry Jones] to hire Schottenheimer, and Jerry is having some resistance. [Jerry] could step back and [agree with them]," Broaddus said. "So, there's a little bit of a push from the sons, and Jerry is having some resentment about the potential hire. So, Jerry is going to have to do what he needs to do to maybe hold things off. I don't know how long he can hold off his sons on this one. We'll see."

Who is the coach Jerry is considering? Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Thursday that Jerry Jones had spoken with former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll about the position. Harris' source described the discussion as "informal," but the "interest is legitimate enough to be reported."

Harris adds that no official interview has been set as of Thursday afternoon.

NFL Network's Jane Slater confirmed that Jones and Carroll spoke recently, and confirmed what Broaddus reported, saying that there was "no unanimous decision yet in Dallas."

"There have been informal talks and “picking of brains” from the likes of Pete Carroll, Deion Sanders and there was even a chat with Rich Bissacia. Brian Schottenheimer seems to have the most steam but things remain fluid," Slater said.

Meanwhile, Pro Football Post reported Thursday that the Cowboys are interested in Biccacia, the Packers special teams coordinator and assistant head coach. However, ESPN's Ed Werder reported a short time later that the Cowboys haven't requested to formally interview Bisaccia, who coached in Dallas from 2013 to 2017.

Broaddus went a step further and said he doesn't see Bisaccia as a viable candidate in Dallas after the coach taunted the Cowboys following the Packers upset win against Dallas in the 2024 playoffs.

"I brought up his name last week and then I didn't talk about it anymore," Broaddus said. ... "If you're one of these coaches who worked here and you say something about the organization. There's a lot of people that remember things that go on here. You never want to be the guy who leaves the organization, says bad things about it, and it gets back [to the team]. ... I wouldn't plan on Rich Bisaccia [coming here]."

Got all that? Stay tuned for more.
