Cowboys survive Chargers 20-17 on Zuerlein Kick

The Dallas Cowboys entered their Sunday afternoon matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers looking to bring home their first win of the 2021 season, and get their record back to .500.

Fortunately for Dallas, Greg Zuerlein was able to deliver in the clutch, with the veteran kicker knocking through a 56-yard field goal to pull Dallas ahead 20-17 as the clock expired.

It was a much-needed redemption for Zuerlein, who took responsibility for the Cowboys season opening loss in Tampa Bay -- and can now take responsibility for their Week 2 win.

While the win was nice for Dallas, however, there were still a handful of glaring issues that will need fixing as soon as possible.

The most notable of those issues comes in pass defense, where Dallas allowed second-year starting quarterback Justin Herbert to throw for 338 yards and one touchdown, with a pair of touchdowns being called back due to Charger penalties.

The Cowboys did intercept Herbert twice, but also allowed Mike Williams and Keenan Allen to combine for 199 yards on 11 receptions.

Offensively, Dallas was also inconsistent, but did just enough to win, accumulating 419 yards of total offense, including 237 through the air on 23 of 27 passing from Dak Prescott.

Tony Pollard led the way for Dallas on the ground, rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

With the win, the Cowboys now move to 1-1 on the year, as they prepare to head back to Arlington for their home opener against their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Footbal.

Kick off against the Eagles is set for 7:15 PM CT on ESPN.
