DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - It's no secret that the Cowboys have a hole in the secondary. And it's no secret that the Cowboys are very much interested in Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II filling said hole.
Teams are relying even more on pro days this year after the NFL Combine was canceled in late February. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was among the NFL personnel members on hand for the Crimson Tide's pro day on Tuesday, and he had to like what he saw out of the 20-year-old.
Surtain measured in at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds. His broad jump of 131 inches put him in the 93rd percentile for a cornerback, and his 39-inch vertical put him in the 85th percentile.
As great as those numbers are, the biggest test of all was the 40-yard dash, which Surtain appears to have passed. Based on his two unofficial 40 times, Surtain ran a 4.42 and a 4.44, which is under the 4.5 benchmark teams look for in a corner.
Surtain has all the makings of a talented, can't miss player. He was the SEC defensive player of the year and a unanimous All-American for the national champion Crimson Tide.
This performance will do nothing to stop the hype and the connection to the Cowboys, who own the 10th overall selection in next month's draft.
