Report: Cowboys moving to hire Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator?
The Dallas Cowboys have hired their new head coach, naming Brian Schottenheimer the 10th coach in team history.
Shortly after that, the defensive coordinator was reportedly set.
Per a report from Cowboys insider Ed Werder, Dallas has tabbed Matt Eberflus as the new defensive coordinator.
However, this hiring seems to be far from set.
Shortly after the report from Werder, NFL insider Jane Slater reported that Eberflus is a prime candidate, but has not been confirmed.
Werder later responded, noting Eberflus is the prime candidate, but that the Cowboys must first go through interviews before a hiring can be made.
This would be Eberflus' second stint with Dallas, after serving as the team's linebackers coach from 2011-2017.
During his time with the Cowboys, Eberflus is credited with helping to put some of the best team linebacker play on the field in franchise history. He helped develop Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith into Pro Bowl players, and was instrumental in DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer having some of their best seasons with the team.
After his success in Dallas, Eberflus was hired as the defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts. And after putting a great defense on the field there, he was eventually named the head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he stayed until being fired this season.
