DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys are going to take a more cautious approach when it comes to the health of quarterback Dak Prescott's injured throwing shoulder.

“We’ve kind of taken a step back. We still feel the same about the type of injury and just," coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday in Oxnard. “It's day-to-day as he goes through it. I'm not putting him in day-to-day status, but just after the day off yesterday, visiting with the medical group, we just feel that if it was in-season, I think there'd be a different outlook. But because of where we are, and having the extra week, we just want to make sure this doesn't turn into something bigger."

Prescott will not play in the Hall of Fame Game this Thursday vs the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the team is still hopeful that he'll be able to play this preseason. After the preseason opener, the Cowboys will have a joint practice session with the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, Aug. 7. After that, they won't practice again until Aug. 10, leaving him up in the air for the Aug. 13 game in Arizona on Aug. 13.

The team's third exhibition game is scheduled for Aug. 21 vs the Texans at AT&T Stadium.

When the injury was first announced, it was reported that Prescott might "miss weeks'' of time after departing the practice with tightness in his right shoulder.

But McCarthy downplayed the injury during a recent appearance with 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ.

"It's minor. I saw him (this morning)," McCarthy said to 105.3 The Fan's "Shan & RJ'' on Thursday. "I don't know if you put him in a 'limited' category. He'll do all the run-game stuff and all the footwork stuff. But we've got to shut him down from throwing for a few days."

Added McCarthy a bit later that day at his press conference at training camp in Oxnard: "Dak will still do all the drill work, he’ll be able do all the mock games. We’re really just going to cut out the throwing here for a few days.”

Prescott himself has said "everything is fine'' regarding the soreness in his shoulder, which apparently stems from a muscle strain in his latissimus muscle in his back. The Cowboys performed an MRI on Prescott last week and sources told 105.3 The Fan then that there is no serious damage, and that Prescott simply needs to rest.

But the Cowboys are being smart to take the cautious approach to give Prescott a few more days of rest.
