DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - There is no resolution between the Dallas Cowboys and Zack Martin. And according to Stephen Jones, there is no timeline for a decision either.
"I have no idea," Jones told K&C Masterpiece when asked if Martin could miss regular season games. "That is a Zack Martin question."
That is not to say that Jones or the Cowboys do not want Martin to come back in a timely fashion.
Rather, the Cowboys just aren't going to rush Martin, or themselves when coming to a decision on a new long term deal.
"We have nothing but respect for whatever decision Zack Martin makes," Jones said. And I think he may not like it, but he certainly understands where we are. Zack is under contract, and hell that's why you live in America. You want to make more money. I have nothing but respect from Zack. And we'll just continue to grind out here. I will say this, of all the people who don't need to be out here at training camp, he might be at the top of the list."
Meanwhile Jerry Jones echos the same sentiment.
However, he also notes that the Cowboys are not only not in a rush for the eight-time Pro Bowler and six-time first-team All-Pro to return, but also seemed to indicate that the the team has currently the leverage in the negotiations.
“He’ll come to camp when he comes to camp,” Jerry Jones said on July 30. “There’s no resolution. There are a lot of consequences if he doesn’t. … He’s been at the top of the money all the way through, drafted high and got a lot of money, got a lot of money over the years. It’s just hard to get it all. The bottom line is, nothing needs to happen.”
Either way, the Cowboys surely want their captain and arguably their best player to return sooner rather than later.
After all, with Martin in the lineup, the Cowboys are 82-55 all-time. And without him, they are below .500.
