DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Still searching for a cornerback to take hold of the starting cornerback spot opposite Trevon Diggs, the Cowboys went out and added veteran Xavier Rhodes to their practice squad a day before the debacle against Washington.
Rhodes is a former three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro. The 32-year-old was one of the top cornerbacks in the league after being selected by the Vikings in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After seven seasons in Minnesota, the Vikings released him in 2020, and he signed consecutive one-year deals with the Colts.
Rhodes signed with the Bills practice squad in September and appeared in two games this season before being released last Wednesday.
Rhodes now joins a Dallas secondary that has struggled to find a No. 2 corner after Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis suffered season-ending injuries.
Dallas tried out multiple combinations against the Commanders on Sunday after DaRon Bland exited with a chest injury, including Trayvon Mullen and Nahshon Wright. Neither player did anything to solidify the left corner spot, which may lead to Rhodes being thrust into the lineup against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card game on Monday night.
“It wouldn’t surprise me, absent of something happening this week, if he were in our active group. But we’ll see how this week goes on that. I can’t be definitive there," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday on Shan and RJ on 105.3 The Fan.
On the injury front, Jones said he "absolutely" expects Bland, in addition to linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (neck), nose tackle Jonathan Hankins (pec) and center Tyler Biadasz (ankle) to be available for Monday's game.
