ARLINGTON (105.3 The Fan) - Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters on Sunday night that the team will need to be “outstanding” in “figuring out ways to win ball games” until Dak Prescott returns to the lineup.
A dejected Jones spoke to reporters outside the locker room for 10 minutes following the news that Prescott needs surgery on a fracture near his thumb.
Following a battle for the backup quarterback position between Cooper Rush and Will Grier during training camp, Jones made it clear that this is Rush’s job while Prescott is out.
“We’ll have to have Cooper [Rush] step up, and he’ll be getting all the reps, and we’ll go from there.”
While Jones was clearly dismayed at the loss of his franchise quarterback, he struck an optimistic tone at the conclusion of his media session.
“I’m quickly reminded of how I felt when Tony Romo went down against Seattle,” Jones said. “And then I’m reminded of how I felt two and a half months later, three months later, when you had to make a decision whether (Dak) or Tony started against Green Bay in the playoffs.”
Jones added that it’s key to find silver linings in the face of trying times.
“I’m not trying to coach anybody up on how to handle adversity, but I do know that at least early, get you something positive to hang on to,” Jones said. “And that’s exactly what I’m doing right now.”
