DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Dallas Cowboys WR Michael Gallup spoke with reporters on Thursday for the first time since he agreed to a new five-year deal with the team.
“I wanted to be here. The Cowboys have faith in me, and I appreciate it,” Gallup told reporters during a Thursday morning conference call.
In an offseason of change and uncertainty, Gallup proved to be one of the few free agents the Cowboys decided to prioritize, despite a lot of questions about his future in Dallas during this past season.
Gallup’s return became increasingly likely in recent weeks as it became apparent the team was going to move on from Amari Cooper, who they agreed to trade to the Cleveland Browns last week.
“I love Amari Cooper. He taught me so many things,” Gallup said. “He was actually the first one to hit me up when everybody figured out that I had a new deal with the Cowboys, and he let me know that I’m that dude.”
Gallup’s deal comes in the wake of a late-season knee injury that will likely sideline him late into training camp, and potentially the beginning of the 2022 season.
Gallup said he can’t “put a timeline on it,” but will work diligently to be back by the start of the year.
One person who was elated with the return of Gallup is Cowboys QB Dak Prescott. Gallup has been a favorite target of the Cowboys’ signal caller, especially down the field, with the duo averaging 16 yards per completion since 2019.
“Dak knew I was going to be here for the long haul,” Gallup said with a laugh.
“That man has had faith in me since Day 1.”
Gallup said the first thing Prescott told him following the deal was to “get that (knee) right so we can go to work.”
