Jerry Jones seems content to let deals come his way ahead of the looming trade deadline. But if there’s an opportunity to extend himself to bolster the 2023 Cowboys, he sounds plenty amenable to that.
Dallas is in an interesting spot. It boasts one of the most talented defenses in the league, but some flaws have been exposed – particularly since losing Trevon Diggs for the season. The Cowboys figure to be one of the best teams in the league by season's end, but in their biggest test of the year, their Week 5 meeting with the 49ers, they got walloped.
The trade deadline is on Halloween, and there have been mixed reports about how aggressive the Cowboys are expected to be. In his weekly appearance with Shan & RJ on Tuesday, Jones offered some insight into his deadline outlook.
“It’ll have to come our way. I don’t want to preclude it in any way, but it always does,” Jones said. “You have a lot of machinations that you’re working with every day, I do, but the initiation of an opportunity to make a trade at this time that would help us, principally has to start on the other end. That’s not showing a lack of aggressiveness, it’s just that’s where it starts.
“I like where we are with our personnel today, so I’m not thinking in any way that we need to upgrade our roster.”
The Cowboys are in win-now mode. Whether it’s the Cowboys initiating a discussion or another team, there’s the possibility that a potential big splash could come across Jones’ desk.
He left the door open for making such a move given his outlook on the 2023 Cowboys.
“I would really extend to improve our team right now, so that gives you an idea because I think we’ve got a team that is a contender,” Jones said. “So I would do it right now – would I do something that would take away from this team so that it can help us in the future? Probably not.”
