Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones joined Shan, RJ and Bobby for the first time this season Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan.
Jones spoke about the team's big road win over the Cleveland Browns to open the season, what he saw from the running backs, why Dak Prescott's deal came when it did and why he felt justified approving the biggest guarantee in NFL history. Jones was also asked if the contract would only be deemed a success if they won a Super Bowl.
Here are some of the highlights:
Why did you wait so long to sign Dak Prescott?
Oh, well, I think first of all, what if you're not right? What if you're not right? What if you're wrong? You shouldn't have extended it. Have you ever thought that in any case, I'm talking about Dak's contract at all. But in any case, secondly, it's a real misnomer to think that you had a meeting of the minds at this level that we ended up (at). Once it's done, you said, why couldn't you all have gotten that done yesterday? That's easy. Just pay him the most money ever. Well, you have no idea where you were close to a meeting of the minds. Dak, of course, had the ability to play this out this year and be free in a market that could really reward that very much. And the assumption you're making when you say late in the game on any of these players, have we ever signed any players early and then (were) sorry that we signed them? You guys get your memory cap out. We have, haven't we? (We) signed them two years too early, a year too early, (we) didn't see enough. So it does happen and just you are dealing with such an inexact (science).
Are you ever worried about hurting a players feelings in a tough negotiation, or worry that a player would demand a trade over a negotiation not going their way initially?
"I've never seen anybody get their feelings hurt enough that the money couldn't cure."
