DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones joined Shan and RJ for his weekly visit on Tuesday morning following his team's Week 5 win over the Giants.
During the interview, Jones was asked about Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden's decision to resign on Monday after reporters with The New York Times uncovered a “trove” of emails Gruden sent over the course of seven years containing racist, misogynistic, and homophobic invective.
What is your reaction to the Jon Gruden story?
"I know these people. I know everybody that you've been reading about. They're outstanding proponents of our game. They have represented this game in many cases beautifully. And certainly, we all continue to recognize what a spotlight you're in and the way that we should express ourselves. All of that comes to my mind."
Did he deserve to lose his job?
"I don't have anything I want to express there, one way or the other. From the standpoint of contribution, I know that we all are accountable to even a, if you will, a fleeting or minor part of our actions. We all are accountable to those. But that's about all I want to comment on it. We are talking about people here and even the ones that some of the comments were directed about. Those have been outstanding people in the NFL.
We have all had to change and adapt to the times in what is offensive today versus 20 years ago. Can you talk about your awareness level of having to change from 30, 40, 50 years ago with what is deemed acceptable or not?
Daylight and dark. Daylight and dark. Just the technology alone but certainly because of the expectations. Those have dramatically changed. But they were changing from where they were 30 years earlier, 30 years ago. We have to just keep our eyes open. The incidents that get portrayed aren't necessarily a reflection of the individual or a reflection of his life, but they certainly are impactful. You are accountable for them. That's about all I can say. It's almost like the quote, just looking at an incident and trying to describe it rather than having an opinion on it. The opinion is just a wish that we could have all things that we're discussing be complete positives, but that's not life.
