Jerry Jones Says Cowboys Haven't Spoken With Earl Thomas

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - An elusive Jerry Jones joined Shan and RJ Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan.

With the Cowboys safety Xavier Woods on the shelf with an injured groin, Jones was asked if the team had yet to make contact with free agent Earl Thomas?

"Discussions directly with Earl (Thomas) ... we have not had any, but I have not had any either. Discussions internally. We have discussions. Certainly, he's an outstanding football player. We're sitting here at personnel time and we're looking for ways to get better. He'd be one of several we'd discuss during this particular time as we finalize this roster. It would be a misleading thing to say we haven't discussed him, it would be a misleading thing to say that we have. "

But if Jerry hasn't spoken with Earl doesn't that insinuate where they stand on bringing him in?

"Do ya'll want me to tell you which way I'm going when I leave my office? ... There's competition out here. I know you understand on something as sensitive as a competitive roster decision why we wouldn't discuss it with thousands and thousands of people that aren't necessarily fans, some of them are competition."

As for Woods' injury, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said yesterday that the team wasn't concerned that Woods would miss much time.

“He just kind of felt it a little bit but never felt a pop and never lost strength in it,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “So, overall, we feel like we’ll get a good report on that.

“One of the things we do have is we have some flexibility with some of our corners that we feel like can play safety. This day and time there’s coverages that’s such a premium. That’s a big deal for us, whether that’s a [Daryl] Worley or a Chido [Awuzie]. Of course, we moved our rookie [Reggie] Robinson back there [to safety]. So, you know, we’ve got some options there that we feel good about, but hopefully, in particular, Xavier is the leader of the group back there. Serves on our senior leadership council, and a guy we hope is going to be just fine.”
