DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - How good are the 2022-23 Dallas Cowboys? Well according to former coach Jimmy Johnson, they could be better than his two-time Super Bowl-winning teams.
During a visit with 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ on Thursday, Johnson gave some extremely high praise for this Cowboys team, as well as some not-so-flattering thoughts about their NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles.
“I think this is the best Cowboys team that I’ve seen," Johnson told Shan and RJ. "I’m still not 100% sold on Philadelphia. The NFC is down. I think the Cowboys have a better shot than most.”
In terms of the Cowboys, perhaps Johnson is being a bit hyperbolic. Or perhaps he is referring to the teams under Mike McCarthy and Jason Garrett specifically.
After all, his 1992 and 1993 teams in Dallas are considered some of the best teams to ever hit an NFC field.
Either way, in terms of this 2022 team, the fact remains that the Cowboys and Eagles have already faced off once this season, with the Eagles dominating Dallas for the vast majority of a 26-17 win.
Though it also should be noted that Cowboys backup Cooper Rush was still under center during that game, while starting quarterback Dak Prescott was still out recovering from his hand injury.
So why isn't Johnson sold on the undefeated Eagles? He believes it starts with their high-powered offense.
"If you look at Philadelphia, they run a different style of offense that gives people problems right off the bat," Johnson said. "Most of their scoring comes early, especially in the second quarter. but once a team adjusts to that different style, the second half they're playing them touch and go. And the other thing is, a team playing them for a second time will be that much better prepared for them."
Unfortunately, the Cowboys won't have the chance to prove Johnson's hypothesis correct until Week 16, when the the Eagles come to AT&T Stadium on Christmas Eve.
