Jerry Jones leaves door open for Cowboys QB competition if Cooper Rush plays well enough

File under: Never say never.

The Dallas Cowboys are trotting out Cooper Rush at quarterback with Dak Prescott rehabbing a right thumb fracture. Pretty much since the day after the injury happened, the Cowboys have been optimistic that Prescott won’t be out long, with a return next week against the Washington Commanders not totally out of the question.

Rush did a fine enough job in Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals, but the reality is he’s just keeping the seat warm until the franchise quarterback is ready to return.

Or maybe not?

“Wouldn’t it be something if you had a dilemma as to which way you go?” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Thursday, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “You do that if he gets 10 wins. Same thing that happened with Prescott (in 2016). I think like that.”

When asked about the noise that would cause around the team and if he would welcome it, Jones said “of course”, as such a decision would mean the Cowboys are winning games.

"If he comes in and plays as well as Prescott played, Rush, played that well over these next games ahead, I'd walk to New York to get that."

Of course, wanting that and it actually happening are two very different things. Jones was pressed on if he thought Rush was actually capable of playing the way Prescott did when he won the job.

"Well I don't know that," Jones said, "But you can't find on record where I said I thought Dak Prescott could do it when he stepped in (for Tony Romo in 2016) and had a chance to do that. But he did it."

Hey, never rule anything out in today’s NFL, but ultimately it might be a moot point. Prescott had 10 games to prove himself in 2016, Rush might get as few as two. But Rush playing so well that the Cowboys have a legitimate conversation about making Prescott win his job back – or at least needing to compete for it – would be a stunner.
