Mike McCarthy out as Cowboys head coach

The Dallas Cowboys will have a new head coach in 2025.

According to reports from NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Cowboys and Mike McCarthy were unable to come to terms on a new deal, making the coach free to pursue other opportunities.

"Sources: Mike McCarthy is out as Cowboys coach," Pelissero said on X. "The sides couldn’t agree on length of contract and McCarthy will pursue other opportunities. He leaves Dallas with a winning record and three playoff appearances."

The Cowboys had until Tuesday to find a resolution on an extension with McCarthy, and took their time to explore their opportunities together, even denying interview requests for McCarthy from the Chicago Bears.

Ultimately, per Pelissero, the two could not come to terms on the length of a new deal, and decided to go their separate ways.

The Bears and Saints are both expected to be interested in McCarthy now that he is free to talk to other teams, according to Ian Rapoport.

He ends his Dallas Cowboys tenure with a 49-35 record, including three-straight 12-5 seasons and two NFC East crowns. He was also 1-3 in the post season, and never advanced the Cowboys past the divisional round.
