Cowboys or bust? NFL insiders say Mike McCarthy has options this offseason

Could Mike McCarthy actually be the one in control of his destiny this offseason rather than Jerry Jones?

The biggest talking point over the last several weeks has been about McCarthy's future and Jones' forthcoming decision on whether or not to retain his head coach for next season and beyond.

According to multiple NFL insiders, we might be looking at it the wrong way.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL on Fox's Jay Glazer created a stir over the weekend when they reported that because McCarthy is technically not under contract when the season ends, he is free to negotiate with other teams this winter - and there would be suiters lining up to speak with him should he be open to it.

"When I say maybe, it's not that he's not deserving," said Schefter. "It's that it goes both ways. Number one, Jerry Jones has to decide I want to renew him, and McCarthy has the ability to go talk to whoever he wants about a head coaching job. So he can go listen to the New Orleans Saints, where he's coached before. He can go listen to the New York Jets or any team that has an opening and wants to talk to him."

Glazer also pointed out on Sunday that McCarthy is out of a contract and "is on other teams' coaching lists if the Cowboys decide not to re-sign him."

Does McCarthy hold all of the cards? Shan and Bobby reacted to the report on Monday's show.
