DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Former Cowboys pass rusher Aldon Smith has agreed to a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported Thursday morning.
Smith's departure to Seattle isn't surprising as the Seahawks were interested in acquiring him before the NFL trade deadline last season, but Dallas decided to hold onto him. Instead, the Cowboys get nothing in return as Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports that Dallas won't receive a compensatory pick for the defensive end.
Smith, 31, made his triumphant return to the NFL last season after missing four years due to a series of off-field issues. He started all 16 games for the Cowboys and had five sacks.
105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher reported last month that the Cowboys were expected to part ways with Smith due to "issues." You can watch his latest report in the video below.
At season's end, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, “It’s inspirational to see a man like Aldon Smith have the comeback here that he had. ... and we want him to build on it to the benefit of the Cowboys.”
That comment caused some media outlets to report that Dallas was still trying to bring back Smith, and it's caused other outlets to suggest that the recent signing of edge-rusher Tarell Basham is the reason Smith isn't a Cowboy.
But those reports were wrong, Fish said at the time. And he turned out to be right.
