DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Cowboys are planning to move on from Amari Cooper and bring back Michael Gallup in free agency.
Fresh off Adam Schefter's Friday report that the Cowboys are "likely" to release wide receiver Amari Cooper in the next two weeks, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported that Dallas viewed it as an "either/or" situation between Gallup and Cooper, and have prioritized keeping Gallup.
The Cowboys received positive news last month about Gallup's recovery from the torn ACL he suffered at the end of the 2021 season. According to Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus, Gallup is expected to be fully healthy well before the start of the regular season.
Prior to his ACL injury in Week 17, the 26-year-old missed several games with a calf injury and finished the season with 32 receptions for 409 yards and one touchdown in eight games.
Meanwhile, Cooper had a down year last season, posting 865 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 68 catches. That production doesn't exactly equate to a receiver coming off of the second year of a 5-year, $100 million contract.
If Cooper is traded or released before March 20, the Cowboys will save $16 million off the salary cap. If he's still with the team on the fifth day of the new league year, an additional $20 million of Cooper's remaining contract becomes guaranteed.
