DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys will not tender restricted free agent linebacker Luke Gifford a contract this offseason, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports.

The team has an interest in retaining Gifford for less than the $2.433 million cap hit they'd take on by tendering him at the lowest level.

Gifford, who has spent the first three seasons of his career with the Cowboys, led the team in special teams snaps in 2021. After appearing in just 14 games over his first two seasons, Gifford played in 16 regular season games last season and in Dallas' playoff loss to the 49ers.

The Cowboys only have two linebackers under contract next season - 2021 draft picks Micah Parsons and Jabril Cox. Leighton Vander Esch and Keanu Neal are among their 19 unrestricted free agents this offseason. Francis Bernard is an exclusive-rights free agent, which means that if the Cowboys offer him a one-year, league-minimum contract, the player can't negotiate with other teams.
