ARLINGTON - The guy who runs the Dallas Cowboys is using some “special” names as comparisons to Trevor Lawrence.

And rookie QB Lawrence, who figures to be the guy who runs the Jacksonville Jaguars for a long, long time, on Sunday proved Jerry right.

During a recent appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones was asked if he believes Lawrence is a “special talent” along the lines of Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning.

“Yes, yes.” Jones said, “I think he’s in that conversation. But, boy, of late, we’ve seen several of these (young) quarterbacks … hit the ground running in a more accomplished way early in the season than it used to be.

“You remember we had some pretty bumpy years there early with Troy. Not Troy’s fault, but we were just trying to build something around him there.”
This preseason finale at AT&T Stadium - during which Jacksonville forged an early lead - was very much about the “build-around” for No. 1 overall pick Lawrence. There will be growing pains …

But not on this day.

In three drives against the Cowboys' reserve defense, Lawrence was almost flawless. He completed 11 of 12 passes for 139 yards for two touchdowns and zero interceptions, giving him a passer rating of 154.5.
Lawrence was recently named the starting quarterback for the Jaguars. And yet coach Urban Meyer wanted to see a little something of him before the NFL season really starts.

To be honest with you,” Meyer said, “we had to see that."

But Jerry Jones? Even before the Jags showed up, he sort of already knew.
“I don’t think there is any question,” Jones said, “that Lawrence is … the real deal.”
