Dallas Mavericks to sign star forward Klay Thompson to multi-year deal

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Mavericks are gearing up for another run at the NBA Finals, and they are not pulling any punches.

Throughout the offseason, they have made a handful of moves to improve their roster heading into next season.

However, the biggest move fell on Monday afternoon, with the Mavs reportedly agreeing to terms with former Golden State Warriors star forward Klay Thompson on a three-year, $50 million deal.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was first to report the deal.

Per Wojnarowski, Thompson will come to Dallas as part of a sign-and-trade deal involving the Charlotte Hornets that will send Mavs role player Josh Green back to Charlotte. Dallas will also receive two second-round picks from Charlotte, but one of the picks could be going back to Golden State.

It's unknown what other pieces could be involved in the deal.

Wojnarowski continued in his report to state that Thompson received four-year offers for more money, "but taking less was offset by the chance to win a fifth championship with the Mavs and difference in state taxes.

Thompson had been with the Warriors for 13 seasons from 2011-2024, finishing his run in The Bay as a four-time NBA Champion, five-time NBA All-Star, and two-time NBA All-Third Team performer. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2019 and won the NBA Three-Point Contest in 2016.

For his career, Thompson has averaged 19.6 points per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from three. This past season, he averaged 17.9 points and hit 38.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Thompson missed the entirety of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons with knee and Achilles injuries, respectively, and has not earned any postseason or All-Star honors since the 2018-19 season. He has still been productive, however, averaging over 20 points a game, and hitting just under 40 percent from three.
