DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Want to own a unique piece of Dallas Mavericks history? Well, now you can. If you have several thousands of dollars to spare.
DeShawn Stevenson, a member of the Mavericks' 2011 NBA Championship team, has put up his championship ring for auction.
The current bid for the 10K gold ring, which includes "over 130 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 2.75 carats," is up to $31,322. Bidding for the ring comes to a close on Saturday, June 4, at 9 p.m. CT.
The Auction is being hosted by SCP Auctions. You can find more information on the bidding here.
Mavs owner Mark Cuban is known to have paid a total of $1.4 million for the team's rings, but it would have cost him more if two of his stars had their way.
In an interview with 105.3 The Fan back in 2011, Cuban said Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd wanted him to spend $150,000-$200,000 on each ring, but league rules prevented him from doing so.
"I'm like, 'OK, you do know the NBA has a limit on how much we can spend, right?' And it's not 150 grand, trust me," Cuban said. "I'm not going to tell you the exact amount but it's nowhere near. The NBA, because they don't want salary cap violations, puts a limit on how much you can spend on any given ring for any player."
While Stevenson is often overlooked when discussing the Mavs' championship team, which included the likes of Nowitzki, Kidd, Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea, it's not forgotten that the shooting guard played a key role in helping the organization claim their first and only title with his hard-nosed defense and perimeter shooting.
Stevenson started each game in the team's 2011 playoff run, besides the final three games of the NBA Finals when former Mavs' head coach Rick Carlisle decided to insert Barea into the starting lineup. That wise decision didn't diminish Stevenson's impact on the series, however, as he shot 13-23 from behind the arc in the series, including three triples in the series-clinching win over the Miami Heat in Game 6.
