Magic Johnson: "Mavericks will be NBA championship contenders for years to come"

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The reaction on social media was rampant on Tuesday night after what Mavericks star Luka Doncic did in the closing seconds of Dallas win over the Boston Celtics.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson joined the party Wednesday by heaping praise upon Doncic after he made not one, but two go-ahead three-pointers in the final minute of the game. The second of which occurred with .1 seconds left on the clock, sealing the 110-107 win for the Mavs.

"Luka Dončić's game-winning three-pointer against the Celtics last night further proves why he is a once-in-a-lifetime player & MVP candidate. The Mavericks have one of the most explosive offenses in the league led by Coach Rick Carlisle and Luka ... and once the Mavericks defense catches up, they're going to be contending for NBA Championships for years to come."

The victory gave the Mavericks their seventh win in their last nine games, and brought them to .500 for the first time since they were 8-8 on Jan 23.

The team has been decimated by COVID-19 and injuries this season, resulting in some inexperienced players being forced to play heavy minutes at times.

The Mavericks finally got their full team healthy, recently, but center Maxi Kleber went down with a sprained ankle in Monday's win over Memphis, and Kristaps Porzingis missed his 13th game of the season on Tuesday.

Dallas also remains near the bottom of the league in team defense, as Magic pointed out, but he's banking on some improvement there. The Mavericks can only hope that is the case, as they proclaimed that the moves they made in the offseason were geared toward making them a better defensive team.

But one thing is clear to Magic, if you have Luka Doncic on your side, you have a chance to win any given night.
