DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Mavericks needed a big man after Willie Cauley-Sten opted out of the final year of his contract this week.
Dallas reportedly became a finalist for Raptors free agent center Marc Gasol before he narrowed his choices down to Toronto and the Lakers, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Sunday.
So after missing out on Gasol, the Mavericks turned their attention back to Cauley-Stein and agreed to a two-year, $8.2 million deal with the 27-year-old. Shams reports that the second year of the contract is a team option.
Cauley-Stein appeared in just 13 games for the Mavericks after they acquired him in a trade with Golden State on Jan. 25, averaging 5.2 points and 4.6 rebounds in just over 12 minutes per game.
Cauley-Stein elected to opt-out of the re-start in the Orlando bubble.
He'll join a healthy Dwight Powell, Kristaps Porzingis, Maxi Kleber and Boban Marjanović on the Mavs front-court.
