DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Mavs fans, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to the future of all-star guard Luka Doncic. ... At least you don't for at least the next five seasons.

Doncic was all but assured to sign a five-year, $200 million supermax extension with the Mavs this offseason. However, after the team suffered their second straight first-round playoff exit of Doncic's young career on Sunday, fans got a little nervous about how he feels about the organization.

But if there was ever any doubt about his intentions, here's this to make you feel better.

"I think you know the answer to that question," the 22-year-old said with a big grin on his face after being asked if he'll sign the max offer this offseason.

According to ESPN contract guru Bobby Marks, Doncic will earn $34.7 million for the 2022-23 season, the first year of his extension. After that, it increases to $37.5 million, $40.3 million, $43.1 million and $45.9 million for the 2026-27 season. These numbers are based on a $115 million salary cap in 2022-23.

Now, you might say that will cover Doncic for the next six seasons (the final year of his rookie deal, plus five more). The one sticking point in all of these negotiations is the "player option." The overwhelming majority of these max deals always include a fifth-year player option, which gives the player the opportunity to opt out of their contract after four years in order to cash in on the open market or with their existing team.

It's a virtual certainty that Bill Duffy (Doncic's agent) will get him that flexibility in his next contract. So, what happens after the 2025-26 season is anyone's guess. But Mavs fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they'll have the next several seasons to improve their roster around their star in order to convince him to extend his stay even longer.
