DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Mavericks re-signed veteran point guard J.J. Barea on Friday morning, agreeing to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum salary, according to reports.
The return of Barea, who turned 36 in June, now gives the Mavericks 16 guaranteed contract spots on their roster.
The regular season roster limit is 15 players, meaning that, barring a trade or another personnel move, the Mavericks will have 'competition' for at least one spot on the roster during training camp.
That said, the Mavs already have a plethora of guards on the roster ahead of Barea in both talent level and youth, and Barea's signature does not guarantee him a roster spot. Rather, it simply guarantees a salary for the upcoming season, allowing them the ability to take care of one of their franchise's most loyal veterans.
A fan favorite, Barea averaged 7.7 points and 3.9 assists, while playing 15.5 minutes per in 29 games last season.
