Tim MacMahon on the Doncic-Lively tandem: Dereck's the bridge to Luka's long-term happiness
The Mavericks may have been handed a gentleman's sweep at the hands of the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, but the future is bright in Dallas thanks to a 25-year-old superstar and a 20-year-old rookie.
ESPN's Tim MacMahon joined 105.3 The Fan on Thursday to put a bow on Dallas' season and spoke about why the paring of Luka Doncic and Dereck Lively II should have fans excited about the future.
"If you wanted to get excited about the future - the Luka-Lively tandem - I would say would be the most exciting thing going forward because he is the exact kind of big that Luka's been craving, and I think this guy has got a chance to be the best big in the league in terms of that style. In the pretty near future," MacMahon said on Shan, RJ and Bobby.
Lively struggled on the road in the Finals, but his stellar performances throughout the postseason and in Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals, when he became the first rookie since Magic Johnson to have consecutive double-doubles in the Finals, has MacMahon thinking big about the rookie's future in the league.
"There's real optimism with Dereck Lively that he can become a three-point threat," MacMahon said when asked about Lively's chances of developing a three-point shot this offseason after making his first career triple in Game 4. "If they're able to have the option of going five out with him on the floor, so you can play big and still play five out, that would be a cherry on the top.
"If he never takes another three, I still think this guy is going to be a hell of a player, a potential max guy on his next deal just because I think he has that type of value as a rim-running, throw-it-up at the shot clock, he can still catch a lob, run the floor, rebound, protect the rim. They think he can be an athletic version of prime Joakim Noah on defense. That type of versatility at 7-foot-1. I was saying Rudy Gobert with good hands and they think he can be more versatile than that defensively. They tanked to get the pick and paid a $750,000 fine. You can add a few zeros to that and it would have been worth it. This kid is a stud. ... He is the bridge to the future of long-term Luka happiness because he's the ideal sort of big that you want to pair with Luka."
Not only did Lively shine on the court throughout the season, but he also shined off of it, growing into a leadership role in a locker room that includes Kyrie Irving and Doncic.
"You heard Kyrie during the Finals refer to Lively as a vocal leader of the team. A 20-year-old rookie - and you have an eight-time All-Star referring to him as a vocal leader of the team. If he ends up being a Tyson Chandler-Brook Lopez-Joakim Noah blend, which I believe is very realistic, that's one hell of a player."
