Brock Holt’s Milwaukee tenure did not last long. The veteran utility man was designated for assignment Saturday after logging just three hits in 30 at-bats for the Brew Crew. While that couldn’t have been an easy pill for the 32-year-old to swallow, Holt’s son, Griffin, took the news pretty well.
Holt, a one-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion for the Boston Red Sox, had probably anticipated a longer stay in Cream City, but apparently 16 unproductive games were all the Brewers needed to see. His dad may not be employed much longer—it remains to be seen whether Holt is claimed off waivers by another club or retained in the Brewers’ farm system (in that scenario, he’d report to the team’s alternate training site in Appleton)—but Griffin doesn’t seem too broken up about it.
Despite his wife being pregnant with the couple’s second child, Holt never considered opting out of the 2020 season. “I’m not in a position to opt out of a season,” Holt told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel last month. “I feel like if I didn’t play this year, my baseball career would be over. If I didn’t play, it would be hard for me to find a job next year.”
Though it didn’t work out for him in Milwaukee, Holt hit a respectable .297 for the Red Sox in 2019 and could attract interest from clubs who value his positional versatility. A fan favorite throughout his six-year Red Sox tenure, many on social media are already clamoring for Holt’s return to Boston.
The Red Sox in their post-Mookie incarnation are having a nightmare season—only the Pirates, Angels and Mariners boast worse records at the moment—but Holt would at least provide a familiar clubhouse presence for a franchise running dangerously low on team morale. If nothing else, Holt’s departure from Milwaukee would at least give him more time to play ball with Griffin who, at age three, is already quite the slugger.
