NEW YORK (WFAN.com) -- Jacob deGrom's Cy Young Award is headed to the shop.

The emblem of the New York Mets ace's dominant 2018 season was damaged when it was shipped from New York to Florida.

Four letters were chipped and there's a chunk of wood missing from the back of the plaque, ESPN reported. The Mets are sending it back to the manufacturer to be fixed.

DeGrom went 10-9 and led the majors with a 1.70 ERA last season. He received 29 of 30 first-place votes for the NL Cy Young, beating out the Nationals' Max Scherzer.

As pitchers and catchers reported this week to spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., news broke that deGrom and his agent have set a deadline of Opening Day to work on a long-term contract extension. He is under team control through the 2020 season.

"I would like to be a part of this team's future," deGrom told reporters Thursday. "Would like the feeling to be mutual, but that's just something we're going to have to see. Like I said, the main goal is just to get ready for the season and make sure I'm ready to go out there and pitch. Those decisions are kind of out of my control, so I just do what I can do."

DeGrom said he will have to discuss a possible innings restriction with his agents if no deal is reached before Opening Day.

"I think that's going to be a discussion that's going to have to be had with my agents," he said. "I'm going to have to sit down with them and really see what they think is best for me moving forward."

The Mets announced Thursday that deGrom will be the team's Opening Day starter on March 28 at Washington.
