When the Bears selected Kevin White with the seventh pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, the organization certainly expected him to haul in more than 25 balls in his rookie season. They certainly thought he'd go for at least 300 yards. At the very least, Chicagoans expected their first-round pick to score a touchdown.
But five full years after White was drafted, the oft-injured receiver hasn't achieved any of those feats throughout his entire career. His numbers currently sit at 25 catches, 285 yards and 0 touchdowns. He's played in only 14 games. He's 28 years old.
And he's seeking a new start. According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, White will be working out for the New York Jets.
The Jets receiving corps lost a big piece in Robby Anderson, and the organization also decided to release Quincy Enunwa, but they gained a couple of notable assets in Breshad Perriman and draft addition Denzel Mims (who is nursing a hamstring injury). Former Patriots, Bills and Dolphins wide receiver Chris Hogan also joined the Jets, completing his circuit around the AFC East. Jamison Crowder is still going to work as Darnold's trusty underneath target. And they're working out other veteran wide receivers, still.
In an attempt to secure some more talent surrounding quarterback Sam Darnold, the Jets may be willing to throw a bunch of receivers out on the field and see what works. After all, White was drafted as highly as he was for a reason: the guy can play, or at least could play when healthy.
Should the Jets like what they see and take a gamble, health will obviously be the biggest factor, as this extremely official graph indicates.
His lengthy injury history includes a stress fracture in his leg that kept him out for his whole rookie season, a severe ankle sprain and fractured fibula the following year, and a fractured scapula in the next one (via NBC Sports). If that's not a tough run out of the gate, I don't know what is.
Time will tell -- along with a good tryout -- whether or not Darnold will have the former West Virginia Mountaineer in his receiving corps for 2020.
