NEW YORK (WFAN.com) -- Calling Todd Bowles "one of the worst head coaches" in NFL history, WFAN's Joe Benigno urged the New York Jets on Monday to fire their coach and immediately reach out to Mike McCarthy, newly axed by the Green Bay Packers.
"They are at the bottom of the bottom right now," Bowles said of the Jets at the start of the "Joe & Evan" show. "I mean, it is a disgrace. There's nothing else to say. This is a franchise in shambles. There's no other way to say it right now. They are in freaking shambles. And if I've got to hear another guy in that locker room say it's not Bowles' fault -- are you kidding me?
"The coach is horrible. He's incompetent. There's no discipline on this team.
"Why do you need this guy coaching the last four games of the season?" Benigno continued. "It's only going to get worse. Why? You know what it's going to be like for the home games? I think I'm going to go to the Houston game, and I'm wearing a bag."
The Jets (3-9) blew a 16-0 lead and lost to the Tennessee Titans 26-22 on Sunday for their sixth straight loss.
The Jets are 13-31 over the past three seasons. With one more loss, Bowles would become the first head coach in Jets history to lose double-digit games in three consecutive years.
Benigno, a lifelong Jets fan, said he "can't take it anymore."
"This is a disgraceful franchise," he said. "They've had horrible owners, whether it's Leon Hess, whether it's the Johnson brothers. The coaches have basically been disasters, just about all of them. But this guy (Bowles) is the worst, bro. He may be worse than (Rich) Kotite."
Benigno said the Jets should waste no time trying to woo McCarthy, the Super Bowl-winning coach who was fired by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
"They should be all over Mike McCarthy today," Benigno said. "'Mike, what do you want? How much is it going to cost to have you come to my team?' Christopher Johnson should be on a plane to Green Bay or wherever McCarthy lives and sit down with the guy now before ... Cleveland or whatever other team it is decides they want to bring him in."
