BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Browns running back nick Chubb left Monday’s practice after being tackled high on the far sideline near the neck area by linebacker Mack Wilson.
Chubb just caught a short pass from Mayfield when Wilson arrived with the high hit.
Following the play, Chubb walked off with a trainer and Wilson got an earful from tight end David Njoku, left guard Joel Bitonio and an assistant coach.
The Pro Bowl back is being evaluated for a concussion the team said.
Before Monday’s practice, head coach Kevin Stefanski said he spoke to the team about taking care of each other on the practice field.
“They have to understand how to practice hard and take care of each other regardless of the dress or the attire that they are wearing,” Stefanski said.
Wilson responded to criticism for the hit on Twitter Monday evening.
Wilson praised Chubb, who finished second in the NFL with 1,494 yards rushing last season, on Sunday.
“I honestly believe Nick Chubb is the best running back in the National Football League,” Wilson said.
Earlier in practice, linebacker B.J. Goodson surprised Chubb, who broke through on a run, and popped the ball free. Goodson quickly scooped up the loose football.
Getting their feet wet – At times Monday it looked like it was the first real practice of the year for the offense, which is understandable.
Baker Mayfield misfired on a few throws, including one to Odell Beckham Jr. and tight end David Njoku. After the throw to Beckham, the receiver looked at Mayfield and pointed to himself as if to say he may have been in the wrong spot.
The run game fared no better than the pass game Monday and the defense got to do a lot of talking.
One of very few offensive highlights saw receiver Taywan Taylor, who got some run with the ones with Jarvis Landry held back, catch a ball over the middle for a 25-30 yard gain.
The defense won the day, hands down.
Singing in the rain – It rained off and on throughout practice until near the end when the skies finally cleared.
In a normal year, the Browns would’ve moved practice indoors to the Casey Coleman Field House, but this is not a normal year.
Stefanski plans to practice outside as much and long as possible this season.
The field house only has room for a 70-yard field and with the weight room relocated to there, only 50 yards are left to practice on.
Short day – If Monday’s practice seemed short, well, it was.
The agreement for the season, which includes the rules for training camps, meant Stefanski’s practice could run only 90 minutes. They’ll increase in length as the days go on.
Puppy pound counter – 24 puppies have been adopted so far and 519 puppies have been adopted during training camps since the program launched in 2015.
Injury report – DE Myles Garrett (hamstring), S Karl Joseph (foot), WR Jarvis Landry (hip), WR Damion Ratley (groin) and C JC Tretter (knee) did not practice.
