PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pirates have hired a former Major League catcher to be their next assistant hitting coach.
It was announced Tuesday that Mike Rabelo will join new Manager Derek Shelton’s staff.
Rabelo spend the 2019 season in the Detroit Tigers organization at the manager for the Double-A Erie SeaWolves.
The SeaWolves finished with a 77-61 record and has a 358-274 overall record at a manager in six seasons in the minor leagues.
He earned the Midwest League Manager-of-the-year award after leading the West Michigan Whitecaps to 91 wins.
The 39-year-old Rabelo played three year in the Major Leagues.
Two with the Tigers and one with the then Florida Marlins.
Rick Eckstein will remain the team’s hitting coach.
