PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) — Draft season is officially upon us.
And you know what that means: an incessant outpouring of mock drafts.
But the mocks play on curiosity, and one of the newest editions to hit the market could be of interest to Steelers fans who are fatigued with the Ben Roethlisberger era and the will-they-won't-they of his '21 status.
This mock draft is also especially noteworthy because it features a surprising drop for one of this year's most prominent quarterbacks.
In NFL Network Charley Casserly's most recent projections, he has slated that quarterback to the Steelers with their first-round pick.
And with the 24th pick in the 2021 Draft, the Steelers select quarterback Justin Fields, according to Casserly.
The former Buckeye would likely be a welcome addition if such an unceremonious tumbling would occur on draft night.
It's a long shot for Fields to realistically fall to the early or mid-20s, especially if you factor in need for the position with all the earlier teams in the draft.
There are four highly touted quarterbacks in the 2021 class, and Fields is undoubtedly in that mix, running from second to fourth in the positional rankings.
Trevor Lawerence is squarely the top prospect and will go to the Jaguars, but Fields could just as easily go to the Jets with the second pick.
Casserly's pick for the Steelers would be a huge get and a no-brainer, but there's little reason to think Fields will drop into the 20s.
